Register for the Online Teaching Course
The Online Teaching Course (OTC) is a six-week fully online course open to all Loyola faculty, staff, and graduate students with teaching positions. The goal of the OTC is to provide you with the experience and skills needed to design and execute a successful online course.
What can I expect?
During each of the week-long units, we’ll cover topics such as:
- Online course design
- Designing activities and assignments for online environments
- Giving feedback using Sakai
- Putting instructional materials online
- Using synchronous and asynchronous technologies to engage students
all with an eye to doing so in an online environment. Each Friday between 10 and 11 am central time, we’ll also hold a synchronous online session where we’ll learn more about each topic or hear from a guest presenter. If you have a teaching assignment during this time, don’t worry – these sessions will be recorded and any work from them can be made up.
There are some assignments in the course, but we generally try to align the work in the class with the work you would do to prepare a course. You should expect to spend about 2-3 hours each week working in the course, and if you complete it, you’ll receive a letter of completion from FCIP.
Do I need to know how to use Sakai?
As a student in the course, you’ll use Sakai and other online instructional tools available at Loyola. If you’re not familiar with operating in Sakai, we do recommend that you attend Sakai training provided by ITRS before taking the Online Teaching Course, as this will make work much easier.
Who do I contact for more information?
Please feel free to e-mail Jessica Mansbach, Coordinator of Teaching and Learning Development at FCIP, at jmansbach@luc.edu and Christopher Dickman, Instructional Designer, at cdickman@luc.edu if you have any questions.
